Tigertrot asked: Jane Austen spelled Austin, Stephen King as Steven – these are the two I see frequently misspelled here in the Books and Authors section, not to mention the dozens of other common orthographic errors in other places.
Am I justified in my irritation, or just being bothered by something I ought not be bothered with?
Still, a person should at least make an attempt to sound literate, if he/she has the faculties to do so…

It is clear that we all still value literacy , if not within our own writing, then in others’. The proof? The impeccable spelling of every single book one finds in major bookstores, not to mention periodicals targeted at both professional (law journals, scientific publications, etc.) and more plebeian audiences (newspapers, ads, etc.). So stop trying to attack me!!!
refugiotrans: In my question, I refer not to the bad spelling of people who are genuinely cut off from learning institutions and libraries, but aim my remark at those who deem the application of their education unimportant. This note is meant as a clarification of my question.
